Young People’s Peer Support Service to Open in Ottery

Action East Devon is opening a new peer support service at The Station Community Centre in Ottery to improve the emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people aged 13 – 24. The scheme has been successfully supporting young people in Axminster and Chard and has made a positive and significant difference to those who have attended. One young person stated: “The Project is the only support that has actually worked for me. The volunteers are all amazing and it’s so wonderful being surrounded by people who understand me.” Peer support sessions provide young people with the opportunity to build new friendships in a supportive and non-judgmental environment, as well as the option to engage in fun activities that build self-esteem, confidence and resilience.

An Open Evening will take place on Monday 4th June at The Station between 6pm and 8pm, where there will be the chance to meet the team, find out more about the free support we offer and to experience some of the activities we provide. Anyone is welcome to attend and there will be refreshments available.

Emma Curtis, the manager of the peer support service, stated: “I’m looking forward to launching this service so that more young people who are experiencing emotional distress can access support in a fun and relevant way. I’m proud of the team of dedicated staff and volunteers who are passionate about helping young people to focus on their strengths and to develop tools and skills to build their emotional resilience. I’m really pleased for Ottery and know that it will have a positive impact on not only young people, but their families and the wider community”.

This service is being provided by Action East Devon in partnership with Ottery Help Scheme and the Ottery Hospital League of friends who recognised the need in their area and have generously supported the venture. 'Ottery Help Scheme and the League of Friends welcome the opportunity to support the young people of Ottery and its surrounding area. We wish Emma and the team every success in delivering this much-needed project.' Emily Lezzeri, Chief Officer of Ottery Help Scheme.

There will be 2 peer support groups available, one for 13-18 year olds and the other for those aged 18-24. The sessions will run alternately on Mondays, beginning with the older group on the 11th June from 6pm – 8pm. We are now accepting referrals via our website www.theprojectyp.org.uk. We are also keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in volunteering at the sessions, particularly those who have experienced mental health issues or have worked with young people in this field.
